- ➤ Frank Flaherty is a decorated veteran who has served as Warwick mayor, on the city council, and coached local youth sports while earning respect for his public service. He has spent decades giving back to the community (by organizing veteran ceremonies and other local events) and is honored this week as a Community Champion (a title reflecting his lifelong dedication). - ➤ United Way of RI and The Providence Journal marked one year of spotlighting state nonprofits as Cortney Nicolato said small organizations felt seen during a time of rising community needs and funding cuts. She urged state leaders to support nonprofits that help families with food & shelter and education. The Providence Journal

- ➤ Warwick Mall announced that Rocky Point Chowder House—named after the historic amusement park that closed in 1996—will open in the food court in early December to serve local diners a taste of Rhode Island tradition. WJAR
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Graphic art students at the Warwick Area Career and Technical Center have created drawings and 3-D models of local lighthouses that will be used in a scavenger hunt at the Winter Festival in Apponaug on Dec. 6 — their work includes pieces by Eleanor Calcagni, Shawna O’Brien, and Blaze Day-Reyes who used a laser cutter to design a paper lighthouse. - ➤ A dedication ceremony was held Saturday, Nov. 8 at the Warwick Historical Society to honor late historian Henry A.L. Brown who passed away June 22, and his research library was renamed the Henry A.L. Brown Memorial Library—his two sons and society members attended the event. Warwick Online

- ➤ Rosemary A. Costigan became the first alumna president of CCRI when she was inaugurated on November 7 at the Knight Campus in Warwick — hundreds of supporters including U.S. Sen. Jack Reed and Gov. Dan McKee attended the event. The ceremony also launched a Presidential Legacy Fund with a $150,000 matching challenge for nursing students, and Costigan promised to lead with dedication. Warwick Online
- ➤ Last Wednesday, teachers, parents, and School Committee members filled the public meeting room at the Sawtooth Building to push for changes in the school budget. Union and retired teachers criticized Budget Commission Chair Ernest Almonte—alleging he shut down questions on special-education costs and used selective data to lessen concerns over the deficit. - ➤ Toll Gate High School hosted a Veterans Day ceremony—led by civics teacher Sean McNamara’s class—for veterans and active military connected to students and faculty on Monday morning. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Rhode Island School Recycling Project announced it received a $750,000 grant to launch a student-led food waste recycling program at elementary schools during a press event at Raymond LaPerche Elementary School cafeteria in Smithfield — the program, now in 63 schools, has reduced cafeteria waste by 78% and aims to extend the life of the state’s only landfill. - ➤ On Monday morning, U.S. Rep. Seth Magaziner hosted his second annual veterans appreciation breakfast and awards ceremony at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Warwick—veterans met over breakfast, heard a legislative update on benefit and mental health reforms, and listened to speeches from local military figures.
