COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Mayor Picozzi and the Parks — Recreation Department will host the Annual Christmas Tree Lighting on December 4 at a local park with carols by Girl Scouts, dance and skating shows, costumed characters, and treats. Guests can skate by donating a nonperishable item, and nearby skate rentals will be available.  Warwick Post
  • On December 6, the 3rd annual Apponaug Winterfest will feature a parade, photos with Santa, face painting, hay rides, and free skating at Greenwood Credit Union City Hall Plaza until 3 p.m.—free shuttles from Tollgate High School will run and skate rentals will be available for a fee—local volunteers are encouraged to help the event run smoothly.  Warwick Post
  • Melissa Cherney, president of the Rhode Island Community Food Bank, said on Thursday that even though SNAP funding was restored after a one-week gap during the government shutdown, local agencies served nearly 100,000 people and distributed an extra 1 million pounds of food, yet hunger remains a serious problem. She warned that confusing changes to SNAP benefits may reduce aid, leaving the Food Bank—already facing unpaid bills—to struggle with meeting local needs.  Cranston Herald

  • ABC6 has introduced the Pilgrim High School Band as its Band of the Week — the station will feature a new high school band every Monday at 4 p.m. during the fall season.  ABC 6
  • Warwick Center for the Arts is hosting its annual Winter Market from November 30 at 12:00 p.m. to December 20 at 5:00 p.m.—the event features unique handmade art gifts from local artists. The Opening Day Reception will take place Sunday, November 30 from 12 to 5 p.m.—shoppers can enjoy a festive boutique experience.  Warwick Post

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students from the SMILE Club at Ferri Middle School today showed science and engineering skills as youth from Ferri, Windsor Hill, and Johnston demonstrated their projects at Family Science Night — where a domino effect challenge and a potato battery project highlighted teamwork and creative problem-solving. Teachers and event sponsors said the program builds confidence and encourages further learning in science and math.  Johnston SunRise

  • Housing leaders met outside the Harold Lewis House in West Warwick on November 21 to warn that a change in federal funding may force over 1,000 people into homelessness — the new rule shifts money from permanent supportive housing to transitional housing and endangers local resources.  Johnston SunRise

HEALTH NEWS

  • Pharmacists Amanda Petrarca and Gregg Jones have run Compass Core Pharmacy at 80 Lambert Lind Highway in Warwick for about six months, offering low-cost generic medications and on-site testing by bypassing traditional prescription benefit managers — the model helps customers save money while receiving quick health care guidance.  Warwick Post

  • High school football ended this fall with Hendricken winning a state championship and teams like Cranston West, Johnston, Cranston East, Pilgrim and Toll Gate showing promise for 2026—coaches credit rising stars and returning players for strong plays this season.
