Pilgrim's girls tennis team is state champion. The top-seeded Patriots beat No. 2 Classical, 4-2, in the Division III final at in Pawtucket on Sat., Oct. 31. It's the school's first girls tennis title since 1986 and just its second overall.

It got tense. Seniors Catherine Deluca and Kharmalina Mitchell sealed it in three sets after Sophie Henner won at fourth singles. “It was so stressful,” Mitchell said.

  • Clincher: Deluca and Mitchell, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4
  • Fourth singles: Henner, 6-4, 7-6(3)
  • Classical's wins: second doubles and first singles

Two other teams won titles that day: La Salle took its 13th straight and East Providence won Division II. The Pilgrim boys co-op won the DIII title just a few months earlier, so Warwick tennis is having a moment.
